MARWOPNET Launches Preventative Action Project in Guinea

During a workshop held November 20 to 22, 2004, the Guinean antenna of MARWOPNET launched a new preventive action project, or "PAP". The project will aim to prevent conflicts within Guinea as well as conflicts with Mano River neighboring countries.

This project comes at a crucial time, as both the Ivory Coast and Liberia are hit by new waves of violence and conflict, a situation that has heightening the risk of destabilization in Guinea, according to Hadja Saran Daraba Kaba, MARWOPNET’s founding president.

Saran Daraba facilitated the PAP workshop for members of MARWOPNET-Guinea’s prefectoral antennas, which subsequently organized regional workshops to set up a network of traditional communicators that will cover all of Guinea. These traditional communicators, to include but not limited to griots, religious leaders, and other influential persons at the local level, will not only work to convey messages of peace, but also will sensitize their communities on education, health, culture, and other issues.

The office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations approved the financing of this one-year project. Besides the network of traditional communicators, the project will include awareness-raising campaigns to promote a culture of peace in the schools and communities, publication of posters and other publicity materials, and many other activities.
